Family winter activities in Saguenay
Ice fishing
Have you ever fished on a frozen lake? Whether the answer is yes or no, you absolutely must take advantage of your visit to the Saguenay to live (or relive) this unique experience with your family. In winter, the surface of the Saguenay fjord freezes over near the shore, as is the case at l'Anse-à-Benjamin, in the borough of La Baie.
The duration of the ice fishing season varies from year to year, but generally runs from mid-January to early March. This time of year is eagerly awaited by fishing enthusiasts. During these few weeks, enthusiasts and the curious alike have the opportunity to take part in this regional tradition.
If you want to experience real immersion, head for the Glaces du Fjord to discover the different outfitters. They offer various packages, guided tours and rental of cabins and heated tents.
Even if you don't like fishing, we'd definitely recommend a trip here in winter! You can go there simply to observe the landscape of the icy fjord, lined with hundreds of mini-homes that take up residence during this period. Yes, in winter, the Saguenay Fjord is transformed into a veritable village on ice! A must-see!
Ice skating
What would winter be without ice skating? Lace up your skates and head to the parc de la Rivière-du-Moulin. Next to the main pavilion, you'll have access to two skating rinks, one reserved for field hockey practice, the other for free skating. If you don't have your own equipment, the park also offers equipment rental. Just go to the main pavilion for more information.
Another great place for ice skating in Saguenay is the park Rosaire-Gauthier. It's easy to get to, because it's right in the center of town! Its ice ring makes it the perfect place to skate. Between the trees, you can skate while admiring the scenery. There's even a fireplace in the middle of the course to keep you warm! At night, when the street lamps are lit, the atmosphere is even more magical.
A dogsled ride
When you imagine a winter landscape, the idea of a dogsled ride is never far away. This winter activity, while seemingly straight out of a movie, is perfectly feasible in the Saguenay.
Some companies offer this service, such as Solo Walks and Between Dog and Wolf. These family-run businesses have been in existence for many years, and offer you the chance to experience the feeling of freedom that comes with a dogsled ride, always with respect for the animals. A family getaway to dream about!
An indoor... activity!
In addition to the multitude of outdoor activities offered in the Saguenay during the cold season, there are also many indoor activities that are just as interesting. If you're the "chilly" type, you'll no doubt appreciate these ideas for winter activities.
If you like challenges and intrigue, we suggest you visit theEscaparium Saguenay. The concept is simple: you have to work as a team (from three to eight people) to escape from a room.
A few universes are available and others are added over time, but one thing's for sure: you'll never find the same concept twice! While you're there, check out another fun family activity: fluorescent mini-golf.
Looking for something to do with the whole family in the La Baie borough this winter? We invite you to visit Musée du Fjordthe Saguenay Fjord is the place to be all year round! You'll find out all about the history of the region and the creation of the Saguenay Fjord, as well as seeing up close many of the species that live there.
If you have a creative spirit and love art, you'll want to visit Ceramuzea ceramic café. On site, you'll be able to choose from a range of ceramic models and paint your own to suit your tastes. All materials are included, and as an added bonus, you can enjoy a cup of coffee during the activity!
